If you have already owned a website for several years than you have probably had your web designer submit your site to the search engines on a regular base in order to see any results.

Times have changed but most web designers haven’t. In fact it is still common practice among local companies to do such monthly submissions with no success. Unfortunately customers don’t know that, overall they are paying the “experts” to maintain their website.

In order to be placed on the Google and Yahoo as well as other small search engines, your site must follow certain rules. Of course, Google and Yahoo will not disclose all of the criteria they have set to determine whether a web site should place at number 1, 20 or not place at all. That would simply make it impossible to have a number one result if all websites follow the exact rules for placement.

However we do know that the following factors must be considered to be placed successfully on Google and Yahoo:

• You must have good content. Overall that’s what you want your audience to read. Correct keywords and key phrases must be used to appear on Google and Yahoo.
• Understand your competition. Identify what makes your competition successful on the web as well as what may be penalizing them.
• Optimize your META tags and other HTML tags within your website. It is believed that Meta tags are no longer as much of an important factor as they were years ago, but other HTML tags have not taken their place and must be set correctly.
• Find other high quality content web sites and have them linked to your site. (This is the web version of word of mouth).
• Understand and concentrate on Google and Yahoo. They are the only two search engines that share the majority of visits from users. MSN, AOL etc are not search engines but simply search directories that display results based on Google and/or Yahoo.
